2 vs 5
The Cav’s moved into the last 16 of the SWFA Senior Cup with a good performance away at Alliance League St Albans.
The opening 10 minutes was a pretty even affair, with both teams sussing each other out. After this Nelson started to take control of the game, playing good football with only the final killer ball lacking to create chances. St.Albans forced a few corners but they were well dealt with by the Cav’s.
Nelson took the lead when the ever busy Corey Haines pressed the home defender into a mistake, before going through 1 on 1 and slotting past the home keeper. The Cavs were now well and truly on top Haines has another half chance, Ceri Clingo went close before the lead was doubled Haines again going through 1 on 1 but when his shot was saved Matthew Greenaway was on hand to fire home. More half chances came and went as Nelson remained in control, St.Albans looked dangerous occasionally but a well held save from a free kick with Matthew Farr’s only really test of the half.
As expected St. Albans came flying out of the blocks at the start of the 2nd half, putting the Cav’s under some early pressure. This resulted in an early goal for the hosts, after a good break from St.Albans Nelson failed to clear their lines giving their player the opportunity to fire home. The game was equal at this point and the next goal would prove to be crucial, St.Albans almost got it in bizarre fashion as a long range shot that looked like it would be a comfortable save for Farr bounces off a divot and clipped the bar before going over.
The Cav’s started to come back into the game and a quick break saw Dan Falconer pushed in the box as he was rushing to meet a cross, Falconer dusting himself down and firing the penalty home confidently to make it 3-1.
Nelson were now back in control, St.Albans offering the occasional threat going forward but the Cav’s were the better of the teams. Cameron Szpadt extended the lead getting his first goal for the club as he times his run well and volleyed home Ceri Clingo’s corner to increase their lead to 4-1.
At the other end,St. Albans big striker had caused problems throughout the match and he perfectly headed home a cross to make it 4-2. Nelson were still well on top substitute Ryan Donovan was causing the St.Albans defence problems and he had a half chance, before Lewis Lawford had one cleared off the line.
Another substitute, Liam Dellana had a great impact and went through 1 on 1 only for his shot to be well saved. Dellana got himself a goal though Donovan kept the ball and threaded through to Dellana who fired home to seal the win. 5-2.
Dellana, Clingo and Donovan all had more half chances before the final whistle but in the end a comfortable and well deserved win. Tough choice for man of the match as this was probably Nelson’s best 90 minutes of the season, we have played well in patches of matches but this win was more or less a complete performance. It goes to Corey Haines for the second week in a row, Haines caused problems going forward throughout the game and always looked a threat, his work rate and pressing off the ball was also second to none.
