The Cavs went into their opening fixture of the season knowing what a tough test lay ahead, with games against Rhydyfelin never easy! That proved to be true as the game started at a frantic pace, end to end but with both defences on top. Nelson thought they took the lead when Corey Haines latched onto a through ball and fired home only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, those decisions never easy but Haines looked to have timed his run perfectly.
As Nelson started to look the more dangerous sloppy possession lead to a Rhyd free-kick, and the inch perfect delivery was headed home to give the visitors the lead. The visitors doubled their lead within 5 minutes when more sloppy possession saw Rhyd break and cross to fire home a good finish.
The half continued end to end both teams forcing a few corners and creating some half chances before Nathan Speller finished a good footballing move to bring it back to 2-1 just before half time.
The second half was a different story, the Cavs responded well to their inconsistent first half performance and came flying out of the blocks. Corner after corner was forced as Rhydyfelin defended solidly, and anytime the Cavs broke through they found an in form Rhyd keeper who made some great saves or were wasteful with their chances.
When it looked to be a frustrating day for Nelson Dan Falconer broke from midfield and made a great run with the ball before crossing for Ryan Donovan to fire home.
More chances came and went and time was running out, it looked as though Nelson would have to settle for a draw before a neat move in the 92nd minute saw Cris Palmer whip in an inch perfect cross for Jonny Day to head home a deserved winner! Great that the two players involved in the winner missed the large majority of last season with injury.
Rhyd will feel hard done by to have conceded so late on but after an even first half Nelson were in control of the second half and deserved the three points. Man of the Match goes to last minute hero Jonny Day.
