1 vs 2
The Cavs suffered a narrow defeat in their first game in the South Wales Alliance League, going down 2-1 at home to Cwmbach Royal Stars in a disappointing performance.
It was the visitors who started the better of the two teams, playing good and quick football that Nelson struggled to deal with during the opening 25 minutes. During that time Cwmbach missed two good chances and two free kicks drew excellent saves from Matthew Farr in the Nelson goal. At this point, the Cavs were lucky to be at 0-0 and on their first meaningful attack of the game forced a corner and after an excellent delivery from Ben Lintern, Jonny Day headed into the top corner to give Nelson the lead against the run of play. This gave The Cavs a much needed confidence boost and they now started to play the football their capable of, putting the visitors under pressure. Captain Matthew Greenaway forced a good save from the visiting keeper and Nelson were on top, before it was Cwmbach’s turn to score against the run of play when a long ball was lost in the blinding sun by Dan Falconer and Farr, allowing their striker an easy finish. The last 5 minutes of the half Cwmbach got themselves back on top of the game without creating any chances.
The Cavs started the second half a lot better and within 2 minutes Liam Dellanna created a good chance for himself only to fire over. Not long later, Dellanna again fired over and Day had a good chance to give Nelson the lead from another corner. After the opening 10 minutes, Cwmbach settled into the half and the game went into a very even affair, both teams having their spells on top although neither side created a chance of note. That was until around the 25 minute mark when a good passage of play saw a visiting midfielder break into the box and slot home to give his side the lead. The game continued in the same vein as the majority of the rest of the half, both teams having spells without creating too much. The Cavs’ best chance again from Day who was a consistent threat from set pieces. The last 10 minutes saw Cwmbach manage the game really well to see it out and earn the three points.
Over the course of the 90 minutes, Cwmbach were deserving of the 3 points, the Cavs will be disappointed with their first half performance but can take the positives from a much better second half.
