A depleted Nelson side moved into the Semi-Finals of the Bernard Martin Cup with a very hard fought win against a good Cascade outfit. With no game for either side for a while, there might have been some cobwebs to blow off but credit to both sides who came firing out of the blocks.
The first half was very much end to end, and a few half chances came for each side before Ceri Clingo broke into the box and was clearly caught, he stayed on his feet first and nothing was given before seconds later he was judged to have been taken out and a penalty awarded. Looked to perhaps be a soft one but the first foul was more than worthy of a penalty, so justice was done. Dan Falconer calmly slotted the penalty home.
The half continued in the same vein and just as it looked like it would end 1-0, but Ryan Donovan pressed the visiting centre half into under hitting a back pass and neatly finished to extend the lead.
Half Time 2-0
The second half was a completely different game with Cascade dominating from start to finish. In the first minute Chris Edwards’ under-hit back pass needed Matthew Farr to pull off an unbelievable double save to keep the score at 2-0.
Nelson’s case was not helped by losing two players early on to injury using the only two available subs, with Hari Davies who had not long come on struggling with an injury.
Cascade brought quality off the bench and this helped them gain more control with the Cavs pretty much camped in their own half for the second half, having said that the visitors failed to create any clear cut chances until Farr misjudged a cross leaving Cascade’s striker with an easy finish.
Despite their dominance, Cascade failed to add to the score and credit to the Cavs who were out on their feet, with a few more carrying injuries but they saw the game out.
Full Time 2-1.
Cascade certainly deserved more from the game but an excellent effort from the Cavs to get the win in the circumstances. Man of the Match was Dan Falconer who, until his injury was dominating the midfield both in and out of possession.
