The Cavs cruised into the semi-final display with a dominant display against Division 1 outfit Caerphilly Athletic.
A venture into the unknown with lower league opposition, the message from the management staff was clear get on top early on in the game and take control. Caerphilly, who travelled with a bare 11 started quite brightly, their winger getting behind the Nelson defence on two occasions early on. From here on in, it was one way traffic. The Cavs began to dominate the game and created chance after chance before taking the lead in excellent fashion, after some neat build up play Ceri Clingo and Ryan Donovan combined well on the edge of the box before Donovan fired home. More chances came before Cameron Szpadt doubled the lead heading home Clingo’s corner. Clingo added a third before Liam Dellana added a fourth, with Nelson missing a host of other chances. Caerphilly went down to 10 men as one of their players was injured.
After a dominant first half the Cavs were warned not to get complacent, and set the target of more goals and a clean sheet. They didn’t disappoint and like the first half it was one way traffic, Donovan adding another 3 goals to make it 4 for the day for him, Clingo added another 2 to get his hat rick, the third being goal of the day with a fierce strike from 25 yards. Many chances were wasted with Dellana, Dan Lewis, Hari Davies and James Radusin all going close to adding to the score line.
Credit must be given to Caerphilly who kept going until the end, never nice travelling with a bare 11 and then worse picking up an injury. A ruthless performance from the Cavs who could and should have added to the score line.
Man of the Match goes to Ceri Clingo, had a hand in a lot of the goals as well as grabbing a hat-trick and goal of the day.
