The Cavs were back in competitive action for the first time in 16 months as we hosted Aber Valley in the 1st Round of the FAW Trophy.
Probably the toughest return we could have asked for with a scorching day, against a good team two leagues higher who were high on confidence after claiming a Welsh league scalp in the Welsh Cup the previous week.
Both teams were looking to play good football from the off and the game started very evenly with both teams having their spells on top.  Not too many chances were created with the final ball letting both teams down and aside from a few half chances the keepers were rarely tested.  Corey Haines and Gareth Morris went close for the Cavs before Aber missed two decent chances on the stroke of half time.  0-0 HT
The 2nd half started with Aber pressing higher up the pitch and not allowing Nelson to play out as much, although a passage of good football lead to the best chance of the game so far as Morris’ header hit the bar before looping over.  As the half went on Aber started to get on top and put Nelson under pressure, around the hour mark Jonny Day gave away a penalty for a push in the back only for Aber’s player to blaze high and wide.  Both teams had a few half chances before 10 minutes from time the visitors got the decisive goal as their player was allowed time to turn in the box and fired home high into the net.  The visitors almost doubled their lead shortly after when somehow a goalmouth scramble was kept out by the Nelson defence.  This spurred the Cavs into life as they put Aber under pressure as we pushed for an equaliser but Aber defended solidly and saw out the game for a win.
A disappointing result, but a good performance all round in our 1st game back, credit to Aber who just about edged it on the day and created the better chances of the teams.  Massive credit to both sets of players and the match official for an entertaining game in such sweltering conditions
Man of the Match for the Cavs goes to Dan Falconer who was solid at the back all game, making some crucial interceptions and clearances.
