The Cavs moved into the quarter finals of the SWFA Senior Cup with a hard fought win at home to Island Marine. With both teams performing well in their respective leagues and having beat higher opposition in the previous round, a good game was on the cards and credit to both teams who did not disappoint.
The visitors opened the game the brighter of the two teams getting in behind the home defence a few times and the first opportunity came to them but their strikers effort was a timid one comfortably held by Matthew Farr.
The Cavs quickly settled into the game and Liam Dellana worked his way into the box only to be denied by an excellent save from the visiting keeper. This seems to have spurred the Cavs on and Nelson were now well on top, the final ball sometimes letting them down or some good defending stopping any more clear cut chances.
Dellana again caused problems with his trickery and pace and he was taking out in the box, with Dan Falconer confidently slotting home the resulting penalty. Nelson were on top and seemed to be very comfortable until a needless corner was conceded and from the resulting cross the Cavs switched off completely leaving Marine’s player with an easy tap in.
The visitors finished the top on half with the goal seeming to have spurred them on but they failed to create any clear cut chances.
Half Time 1-1.
It was the visitors who again started strongly, their striker missed a golden chance in the opening minutes before only an excellent save from Farr in the Nelson goal kept the scores level.
Soon after Dellana went on what is quickly becoming a trademark run and crossed perfectly for Ryan Donovan to fire home.
The game continued to be end to end with both teams having spells on top and missing chances. The visitors equalised again after some neat build up play, Farr saved well from an initial shot but their player was quickest to react to fire home.
The half continued in the same vein and as it looked like extra time was looming, around the 80th minute after a Nelson corner the ball fell to Cameron Szpadt who found himself some space and and rifled the ball home.
The Cavs dominated the final 10 minutes as Szpadt’s goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors and Cris Palmer had two good chances before in injury time Palmer turned provider with an excellence cross for Dellana to volley home and get a goal his play deserved.
Full Time 4-2
A very close game for 80 minutes with both teams having chances and spells where they were on top in the game.
Credit to both teams for an entertaining affair and best wishes to Island Marine for the rest of the season.
Man of the Match was Matthew Greenaway for an excellent midfield display and non stop work rate throughout.
